RHYTHM OF THE FLAME - a group exhibition from 11th to 29th July
Synopsis
The idea for this exhibition was conceived when Mark Eliott first visited our glass gallery.
Mark mentioned that he was exploring the idea of creating works in glass inspired by music. I was keen to explore this innovative idea further and began brainstorming with Mark once he had returned to Sydney. The conversation was well-timed as Mark had embarked on his PhD, the thesis of which revolved around interpreting music into art! I invited Mark to have a show founded on this exciting idea. However, I suggested that he use music from this region.
Soon after, I attended a performance by the versatile Rhythm in Bronze gamelan music ensemble. I was once again impressed with their original musical arrangements and their obvious passion for playing the gamelan. I managed to convince their producer, Marion D’Cruz, to give me an original copy of the group’s only cd and sent this to Mark in Sydney. He agreed that the music was nothing short of inspiring!
Since Mark uses the open flame/torch to produce his pieces, I thought that the title “Rhythm of the Flame” aptly defined the unique collaboration between the contemporary medium of glass and traditional gamelan sounds. To enrich the show further, Raja Azhar, Estelle, Jane, Beth, Dominic, Zila and Michelle welcomed the opportunity to submit works based on this theme.
This exhibition aims to highlight works created in glass using several different mediums namely kiln-formed, slumped, blown, pate de verre, fused, engraved and etched. It should be noted that Rhythm of the Flame is the first ever exhibition of its kind in Malaysia.
